In a state-wide operation, sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) conducted simultaneous raids at 34 places in 10 districts in connection with the alleged large-scale irregularities in granite quarrying in Madurai district over the last several years.
In a press release, the agency said a detailed enquiry was conducted into the irregularities and two cases registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, against N Mathivanan, director, Department of Sugar, Chennai and former district collector of Madurai; Rajaram, deputy director, Mines, Nagercoil, and former deputy director, Mines, Madurai; P Periyasamy, commercial tax officer (retd), Melur; Ganesan, superintendent, Central Excise department; and P Palanisamy, managing partner of PRP Exports Ltd.
The release said the accused officers, while working in Madurai district, abused their official position and with a mala fide intention, concealed the facts pertaining to the large-scale illegal quarrying by PRP granites and Exports, falsified records to show that there were no illegal quarrying activities committed by the company.
“Mathivanan knowingly submitted a blatantly false report to the authorities stating that there was no irregularity or illegal quarrying done by PRP concerns. This was done with a mala fide intention of favouring PRP concerns, thereby causing wrongful loss to the government worth several crores of rupees and wrongful gain to PRP concerns,” the release said.
