DNA Report Suggests Sanjay Roy Lone Accused In Kolkata Doctor's Rape-Murder, CBI Prepares To File Chargesheet
Sources have told CNN-News18 that so far there is no evidence to suggest the involvement of any other person

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials, who are probing the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in a Kolkata hospital last month, say they are in the process of preparing a “watertight charge sheet” against the main accused, Sanjay Roy, whose DNA has matched with samples collected from the body of the victim.

CNN-News18 was the first to report on August 27 that DNA and forensic reports analysed by officials had ruled out gangrape, pointing to involvement of Roy alone in the rape-murder at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

Sources have told CNN-News18 that so far there is no evidence to suggest the involvement of any other person.

Roy, a 33-year-old former civic volunteer who had easy access to the state-run hospital, will be produced in court on Friday and is likely to be sent back to judicial custody. On August 23, Roy was sent to 14 days’ judicial custody. Kolkata Police arrested him on August 10, a day after the doctor’s body was found in the seminar hall on the fourth floor of the hospital.

CBI officials have told CNN-News18 that they didn’t need the custody of the former civic volunteer, an ad hoc force that helps the police in traffic and crowd management. One of the key evidence against Roy is the DNA test report; officials said his DNA matched with the samples collected from the body of the 31-year-old doctor. Forensic tests carried out by experts have also returned results that have gone against the suspect, sources said.

Roy, according to the defence counsel, has said in jail that the victim was dead by the time he entered the seminar hall on August 9. Roy has been captured on CCTV entering RG Kar alone at 4.03 am that day.

The Kolkata case has triggered nationwide outrage, brought the functioning of the hospital under the scanner, led to the ouster of its controversial principal, triggered a heated political debate between the state’s ruling Trimanool Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and spawned allegations about a a larger conspiracy and cover-up. The woman’s family has said they suspect gangrape.
