New Delhi: A murder accused nearly managed to evade the police but for one mistake on social media that got him arrested.
The accused, Animesh Jha, a 32-year-old computer graduate from Malaysia, allegedly murdered his mother Mita Jha.
Sources said he murdered Mita under the apprehension that she might sell their flat and give the amount to his sister, Anjali Jha who stays in London with her husband.
According to DCP Surender Kumar, Animesh went to various places like Rishikesh, Haridwar, Mumbai and Patna to evade police. He visited seven states, 13 cities in 17 days to evade the cops. He was aware that cops could trace him through his mobile phone so he was using the STD booths to make phone calls.
But he created a new profile on the social media site LinkedIn to contact his friends which proved to be his undoing and landed him in police custody, Kumar added.
Cops traced his location with the help of the GPRS log. He was finally arrested from Patna.
The murder occurred on February 23. The cops got to know about it after Anjali called the Delhi Police on February 28 to inform that she was unable to get through her mother and brother. She said her mother's phone is switched off while her brother is not picking up call.
She also raised suspicions about her brother and gave the address to police.
When police reached the address, they found the door locked from outside. On detecting a foul smell coming from inside the flat, they broke open the door to find Mita’s body.
Police then found CCTV footage of the accused locking the door from outside early on February 24.
Animesh had been released just four days prior to the murder by Nepal police in a drug case. Police suspect that apart from the property issue, he could have murdered his mother for not giving him money to buy drugs.
Animesh had previously worked for Norton India.
