One reason why a lot of youngsters look forward to Krishnashtami is the ritual of Dahi Handi, which is said to be a perfect amalgamation of sport and spirituality. Dahi Handi is observed a day after Janmashtami. It is also called as Gopal kala, and the name comes from a dish made of yoghurt, pounded rice and jaggery, which is offered to Krishna on the day. To follow a similar tradition in Hyderabad, Vidaypeet Vedavyasa Vishwa Kalyan Trust has been organising the Dahi Handi in their temple premises since 2004, and this year it will be held on August 22. The temple authorities have organised the ceremony outside the temple from 3 pm to 5 pm. ArrangementsThere will be around 30 pots with different items stored in them. Some have coloured water, some have curd, milk, butter, corn and a few have money. The students of Vidya Peeth will make human pyramids to break these earthen pots, which are hung high above their reach. They have to keep attempting to form human pyramids, till they break all the pots. To make it more entertaining, the whole ritual is accompanied by singing ‘Govinda ala re’ and loud sounds of drums. It not only provides youngsters an opportunity to be adventurous, but also show their team spirit and unity. The Dahi Handi programme will be followed by many other cultural programmes.Another venue organising dahi handi this year is Shilparamam. The event will be held on August 23 and the arrangements have been made in the lawn. The event is open to public from 6 to 7:30 pm and both girls and guys can participate in it.
