KOCHI: The Police Department’s initiative to collect copies of building plans of commercial structures and flats has invited the displeasure of the Corporation with Mayor Tony Chammany stating that it was a move to interfere in the powers of the civic body. “The corporation is the authority that gives licences to buildings and is entrusted with the power to see if the building rules are violated. If there are any violations, the corporation has the right to take action,” Chammany said and demanded the withdrawal of the order. The move by the police to collect building plans has invited protest from many quarters, he added. Chammany said that the police should have set up effective parking facility with the cooperation of the civic body. Instead the police are interfering in the rights of the corporation. However, City police Commissioner M R Ajith Kumar said that the move was aimed at collecting data of big buildings and flats to see if the parking spaces provided had been utilised. And if the parking lot was used for some other purposes, then they would be advised against doing it, he added. “The collection of copies of building plans has nothing to do with the corporation but is an issue related to the building owners,” he said. The police had the right to take action against the building owners who do not provide parking spaces, which leads to parking of vehicles on roadside. Ajithkumar said the Motor Vehicles Department had been asked collect the copies of building plans. The DGP had sent a letter to all the district police chiefs to collect copies of the building plans and verify whether the parking areas have been converted to other purposes. The DGP had sent such a letter based on the meeting of the executive committee of the Kerala Road Safety Authority.
