SAMBALPUR: In what seems to be a damage control exercise, Sambalpur Police arrested one Bisi Pradhan of Mudtal village under Jujumura police limits on Sunday. He has been arrested on charges of conspiracy, harbouring Maoists, collecting funds and providing logistics support in organising camps for them.Sources said Pradhan had been arrested twice before in three Maoist-related cases, including murder of the former sarpanch of Meghpal, Kadar Singh in 2003, kidnapping of the sarpanch of Chamunda, Jayaram Bhoi and contractor Rajiv Panigrahi in 2005 besides opening fire at villagers in Burda village which saw three persons dead and four injured, the same year.In fact with the killing of Kadar Singh, the Maoists had made their presence felt in the district. Although they struck back again by kidnapping 14 labourers from the camps of contractors at Podamal and Phulkusumpur and torching eight trucks, excavator machine on February 8, 2005, they released the labourers after three days. And after the incident, the Maoists were involved in mindless violence including a series of barbaric killing till they left the district in 2009 following the police offensive. Following the Maoist attack on stone crusher of ARSS Infrastructure on the eve of Diwali, the police under pressure have been allegedly arresting old Maoist cadres to send out message to the people that the police are in complete control of the situation.
