BANGALORE: While thousands of people faced hardship following the withdrawal of BMTC buses on the account of Bharat Bandh on Thursday, the traffic police acted against many autorickshaw drivers who were found exploiting the hapless by overcharging and refusing to go to their destinations.The problem escalated around 10 am on Thursday near Majestic in the Upparpet police station limits. An auto driver near Majestic was caught red-handed after he allegedly demanded for Rs 2,000 from a foreign customer for 2 km. “Our sub-inspector was on the spot and caught the auto driver. He was charging a baffling Rs 2,000 for a mere 2 km stretch. We seized his auto immediately, gave him a challan and he ended up paying Rs 2,000 as fine in court,” said Inspector of Upparpet Police Station Sanjeev Kumar Mahajan.He added, “We have seized over 20 autos and over Rs 44,000 fine has been collected. Tourists were exploited. We helped around 300 people get autorickshaws and gave them our mobile numbers too, so that they could contact us if the auto driver demand excess fares.” Such cases were registered at Upparpet, Sriramapura and HSR Layout. The auto drivers were produced in court and had to pay a fine of Rs 2,000 each.“Our SMS service received a health response from the public today. We got a number of complaints about auto drivers. We had given direction to take strict action against auto drivers who were exploiting the people,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M A Saleem.Overall, the bandh was peaceful in the city.
