KOCHI: It was like a journey deep into the sea. The world of fishes, prawns, crabs, corals, oysters and pearls came alive at Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute on Friday. The open-house organised by the institute as part of its 65th Foundation Day celebrations showcased the rich variety of marine life, the methods employed in research and development and the ongoing projects at the institute. It was a big draw for the crowds, especially for students.About 10 departments showcased multiple facets of underwater life and the projects taken up to increase the state’s fish wealth, make fishing easier and beneficial to fisherfolk and self-help groups and also about certain other projects. Each department opened the doors of its laboratories and showcased such engaging aspects like how oysters can be reaped, how deep-sea fishes like squids can be caught, how to distinguish between the male and female prawn, and the what gives the blue crab its name.“This is amazing and very useful. I learnt a lot about the enchanting world of ocean,” said Pratheesh, a visitor. The open-house reiterated that keeping water bodies free of pollution and debris is vital for breeding of underwater species and for preservation of mangroves as well as the safety of planktons.“We mainly targeted students and research scholars and aim to create awareness on marine life and the opportunities available in this field,” said V Kripa, Principal scientist and head of FEMD ( Fisheries Environment Management Division).More than 1,500 students from various schools, researchers and teachers visited the venue. Ever since 2002, CMFRI has been celebrating its Foundation Day on February 3.The museum at the institute, invitingly named ‘Wonderland’ houses a plethora of engaging sights, of all shapes, sizes and colour  that actually makes one wonder at the sheer variety of life under the blue, blue ocean.
