THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Janamaithri Police Scheme in the capital city is in for a major facelift with the City Police planning to introduce a whole range of new initiatives. The move is in a bid to take the services of the police to the weaker sections of the society, especially senior citizens residing alone and spinsters. The initiatives, Senior Citizens Coordination Centre, Spinsters’ Welfare Centre, Hotel Security Coordination Centre, Security Agencies Coordination Centre and Retired Police Officers Coordination Centre, are part of reviving the Janamaithri Police Scheme, which has been lying dormant for quite sometime. According to the City Police authorities, Janamaithri had been remaining defunct for the past few months. Among the new ventures, the Senior Citizens Coordination Centre and Spinsters’ Welfare Centre deserve special mention. Through both these initiatives, the City Police plans to carry out frequent monitoring to ensure the safety and security of senior citizens and women. The police have also identified as many as 650 people residing in the city, who are eligible to avail of the service. Special monitoring teams constituting the Janamaithri Police personnel, including a woman police officer, will frequently visit the old men and women and keep a tab on their welfare. The teams will be provided motorbikes to visit the house of the beneficiaries, said City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham. ‘’The police will also check the various services, like the service of a domestic help or a home nurse subscribed by the senior citizens and spinsters,’’ the Commissioner said. The City Police Control Room will also be at the service of senior citizens and spinsters. ‘’For example, if one of our beneficiary needs a plumbing work to be done at their home, they can contact our control room by dialling 100 and can get the contact details of an authorised plumber,’’ Manoj Abraham said. The City Police is preparing a database of authorised service providers like plumbers, electricians and masons, the Commissioner added. The Hotel Security Coordination Centre will provide safety tips to hoteliers in the backdrop of rising terror attacks in the country. The Security Agencies Coordination Centre and Retired Police Officers’ Coordination Centre will work to provide man power to the various initiatives of the Janamaithri Police.
