London: Cherie Blair, wife of British Prime Minister Tony Blair was investigated by police over allegations that she cuffed a cheeky teenager.
Strathclyde Police said on Monday that investigation was closed and no charges would be framed after detectives called in by the child protection unit failed to find any witnesses to the claims that the Prime Minister's wife, made a slapping gesture at 17-year-old Miles Gandolfi, who was competing in a national school sports event she was visiting.
The teenager was being pictured with Blair, who also sits as a Crown Court Judge, and attempted to make a ‘rabbit-ears’ gesture behind her head.
According to a report in Daily Mail on Monday, Blair light heartedly remonstrated – and her hand appeared to connect with Miles' back.
He was not hurt and both he and witnesses regarded the swipe as obviously playful.
They carried on with the school games, but officials from the Child Protection in Sport Unit who were at the event complained to police after they heard of the incident.
Six plainclothes detectives were dispatched to the event in Glasgow and Miles, one of Britain's foremost young fencing stars, was interviewed by child welfare workers and then by two of the detectives.
Miles' mother Catherine told the tabloid that Blair had been a victim of "bizarre", political correctness. She said, "It's totally been dealt with as far as we are concerned and the matter is closed.
"Miles made a statement to the police in Glasgow. I have absolutely no idea why it all blew up. It just seems bizarre. "I don't know who complained. I don't think police really wanted to be there, but if someone makes a complaint they have to investigate. It was just a pat on the back."
