New Delhi: Ali Zafar has done only three films in Bollywood so far, but he is said to be one of the dark horses of the Hindi film industry. He is all set to reprise Farooq Shaikh's character from the original 'Chashme Buddoor' in David Dhawan's 'Chashme Baddoor'. He talks about the connection between serious and comic roles in a candid chat.

Q: How is your role different than Farooq Shaikh's character?

A: I am playing the role that Farooq Shaikh played in the original, my character's name is Sid who is a straightforward and decent guy. I have played it my way, I am a big Farooq Shaikh fan but my film is completely different. Sid is going to be different from Nikhil of 'London, Paris, New York' or Luv of 'Mere Brother Ki Dulhan' or Ali of 'Tere Bin Laden'.

Q: Actors need a comfort zone to play such roles based on friendship and betrayal.

A: I agree. We used to go out in the evening in Goa, hang out at the beach, share stuff, listen to music, all these things helped a lot.

There are some serious moments in this film as well, people think that comedy is easy but it's not true. You need to understand the depth of emotions in order to make people laugh. As an actor, it's my job to enact the various emotions that my director wants me to.

Q: You are understood to be a person who delves a lot in philosophies.

A: Both my parents come from academic background and education was something that was drilled into our minds. Our house had a certain culture where arts, literature were encouraged, both English and Urdu literature, so the philosophical background comes from there. I guess upbringing makes a lot of difference and the philosophy that I follow is based on 'love and no hate'.

I have read the thoughts of many great Sufi saints and big leaders, and I feel ultimately they all want to convey the same message. Life becomes very easy once you get that message. This helps you in understanding what is happening around you. It's a whole ocean, you can't grasp it all, one should be happy with even a single drop.

Q: How does this idea work for 'Chashme Baddoor'?

A: Comedy is not something superficial, look at Charlie Chaplin, he has given some great philosophical quotes, he said, 'I love to walk in the rain, because no one can see me cry,' so I think the emotion of happiness is just the other side of the coin. Comedy emerges out of tragedy, if you look at the plot of 'Chashme Baddoor', it's a tragedy that Sid's friends want to spoil it for him to convince that Seema is not a good girl but you would laugh on it. People laugh at somebody's tragedies, this is how we are.

Q: 'Aman Ki Asha' is also near completion I guess.

A: I have finished shooting for 'Aman Ki Asha', and I am also doing Shaad Ali's 'Kill Dil'.####

What's your reaction?
