HYDERABAD: The Centrai government is getting ready for a war on its own people in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand in the name of ‘Operation Green Hunt,' civil liberties activist Prof G Haragopal has said.Delivering a lecture on Democracy, Development and the Adivasi Concern of Polavaram Project conducted by Dalit, Adivasi, Bahujan and Minoritiy Student's Association here on Friday, Haragopal said, “Union home minister P Chidambaram recently has planned to deploy 70,000 policemen to fight against Naxalites who are actually Adivasis and trying to protect their resources and rights.” He said the Centre has been trying to get control over the water bodies by constructing dams like Polavaram project. The Polavaram dam on the Godavari could displace 400,000 people and submerge nearly 4,000 hectares of forestland. The rich and unique culture of these Adivasis is at stake because of the ill-conceived Polavaram project, he pointed out.The project threatens to wipe out around 350 Adivasi villages spread across the states of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha, and 600 square km of reserved forests getting submerged.“Development means not just the economic growth of country. It is the growth of an individual,” said VS Krishan, general secretary of the Human Rights Forum.
