New Delhi: The Kolkata High Court has stayed the verdict in the high profile "forced suicide case of Rizwanur Rahman" for two weeks. The court has also asked the CBI to file a chargesheet against all the seven accused.

30-year-old Rizwanur Rahman was a graphic designer from Kolkata.

He had been found dead on a railway track at Patipukur in Dum Dum on September 21, 2007 under mysterious circumstances following his marriage to the daughter of an industrialist.

The CBI had chargesheeted Rizwan's father-in-law Ashok Todi, his brother Pradeep Todi and an NGO worker Syed Mohiuddin alias Pappu for abetment to suicide in the case. It was reported that Pappu had threatened Rizwan of "dire consequences" if he did not divorce Priyanka, industrialist Ashok Todi's daughter.

Four senior police officials have also been chargesheeted in the case. They are: Deputy Commissioners of police Gyanwant Singh and Ajay Kumar, former assistant commissioner of the Detective Department, Sukanti Chakraborty, and sub-inspector Krishnendu Das.

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday, slammed the state government for mishandling the case.

The court has directed the CBI to carry out further probe against all the accused including the top cops and file a chargesheet.

The court also criticised the role of the ex-police commmissioner, Prasun Mukherjee. The Bench has said Mukherjee maintaned a partisan attitute toward the Todis and that he should not have defended their action. The court said that Mukherjee fueled fire instead of defusing tension.

CBI investigators - who have nearly wrapped up the probe - have said they are now absolutely certain that Rizwan committed suicide under pressure and harassment.

The Probe So Far

The interrogations are over and the lie-detection tests have been completed.

The CBI is now wrapping up the probe into the mysterious death of graphics designer, Rizwanur Rehman.

Investigations are now absolutely certain that Rizwan committed suicide under pressure and harassment.

So the agency is preparing a final report that is likely to accuse several people, including senior Kolkata police officials, for abetment to commit suicide.

At the top of the CBI's list of offenders are Rizwan's industrialist father-in-law Ashok Todi and his brother Pradeep Todi, both to be charged with pushing the young graphics man to suicide.

CBI sources have told CNN-IBN that four Kolkata police officials will also be named for threatening and harassing Rizwan including:

  • Deputy Commissioner Gyanwant Singh
  • Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar
  • Former Assistant Commissioner of the Detective Department of Kolkata Police Sukanti Chakraborty
  • Sub-inspector Krishnendu Das

Among others are, Syed Mohiuddin, better known as Pappu, who runs an NGO and enjoys close-ties with some top Kolkata Police officials, will also be named for abetment of suicide.

Like the police officials, Pappu had also threatened Rizwan of dire consequences if he did not divorce Priyanka.

And also on the list is Rizwanur's uncle Saidur Rahman, who allegedly received payoffs from the Todi family to convince Rizwan to sign divorce papers.

The jigsaw puzzle of how Rizwan died has almost been solved and though it is not murder, offenders can be sent to at least 10 years in jail for forcing Rizwan to commit suicide.
