Lucknow: Almost two weeks after a police inspector and a youth were killed in Bulandshahr violence, a video of UP policemen making people pledge against cow slaughter, asking them to socially boycott people who are involved in cow-slaughter, and also to hand them over to police in the city has gone viral on social media.
The UP police are holding sabhas in villages and making people take the pledge.
The cop in the video can be heard saying, “Aaj ke baad gaon me ya gaon kea as paas gaukashi nahi hone denge. Aur jo gaukashi karega uska samajik bahishkar karenge aur police ke hawale karenge. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat (We will not let cow slaughter in our village and nearby areas. We will socially boycott all those who are involved in cow slaughter and will hand them over to police. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat)."
On December 3, a mob of some 400 people indulged in violence after cow carcasses were found in a jungle nearby Bulandshahr. During the violence, Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh and a 20-year-old man died of gunshot wounds. Singh and his team had gone to the area to tackle the violence when they came under attack by the mob.
The UP police seem to be taking the line advocated by CM Yogi Adityanath, who described the incident as an accident, and making efforts to avoid any more such incidents in future.
"There is no incident of mob-lynching in Uttar Pradesh. The Bulandshahr incident is an accident and the law is taking its course. No guilty will be spared,” CM Yogi had said.
Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh was shot in the head. The mob, according to the police FIR, was formed of men from right-wing Hindu outfits who had also blocked cops from taking him for treatment resulting in his death.
The police have booked 90 men for the incident, the suspects include members of the BJP Yuva Morcha, the VHP and the Bajrang Dal.
But Adityanath has maintained that it was not a case of mob lynching.
In a meeting to review the situation in Bulandshahr after the incident, the Uttar Pradesh chief minister directed the police to take strict action against those involved in the alleged cow slaughter.
The additional chief secretary (Information) Awanish Awasthi said the CM felt the incident was part of a “bigger conspiracy”, and hence, all those directly or indirectly related to cow slaughter should be arrested in a time-bound manner.
