MARADU: Excise and Ports Minister K Babu on Friday said that the tender procedures to set up a modern waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram will be completed at the earliest. “The government will ensure that the plant at Brahmapuram will not create any environmental issues,” he said while inaugurating ‘Mazhayathum Munpe’, a pre-monsoon health care drive of the corporation. He said that only a small area would be needed from more than 100 acres of land at Brahmapuram for setting up the modern waste treatment plant. The other areas will be utilised for setting up an industrial unit. The proposal has already been included in this year’s budget, he  said. “The biggest factor in setting up a solid waste treatment plant is winning the trust of the people. The move to set up the industrial unit will also help in clearing the apprehensions of the people in the area,” he said. Babu said that the government doesnot have any hidden agenda while setting up waste treatment plants. “The government wants to set up more treatment plants with the association of the people and through the local bodies,” he said.  ‘Mazhayathum Munpe’ is aimed at making the upcoming monsoon free from diseases. As part of this programme, respective local bodies will start cleaning of the drainage and other water sources in the area for better flow of water. District panchayat president Eldose Kunnapilly, Maradu municipal chairman T K Devarajan, block panchayt presidents Reez Puthamveetil, Eleeyamma Issac, G  Sudhambhika and Kumbalam panchayt president K K Joseph, deputy district medical officers Safiya and Sibi Sevour, district sanitation committee coordinator P K Alexander were also present.
