He may have lost the semifinal bout but it's still a big achievement for India.

New Delhi: Despite his disappointing semifinal loss at the World Boxing Championships in Milan, Indian boxer Vijender received a fitting welcome as he stepped out of the Indira Gandhi International Airport after his flight from Milan back home.

For the third time in a row, Vijender had to settle for bronze in major competitions. He had won a bronze in Beijing Olympics last year and the Asian Championship this year as well.

However, Vijender is hopeful of a better future ahead.

“Chinta mat kijiye, bus dua kariye, ring ka kam mera hai, woh din dur nahi hum gold ke sath wapsi hogi (Don’t worry, just wish me luck and next time I am certainly going to come back with a gold medal,” says Vijender.

He may have lost the semifinal bout but it's still a big achievement for India, considering it's the country's first-ever medal at the World Championships.

Despite the disappointment, the boxer looked his usual cheerful self even as he cleverly ducked questions on the controversy surrounding his contract with Percept and IOS, the company that has managed him in the recent past.

The jinx for Indian boxing was broken at the Beijing Olympics and the fact that they are heading in the rigtht direction is clear from their show in Milan. What remains to be really seen is whether these boxers can taken Indian boxing to an all new level through some consistent performance from here on.
