A child was critically injured and almost 200 shanties were completely gutted when a fire broke out at a slum near the Ultadanga railway station in northern Kolkata.

Kolkata: A child was critically injured and almost 200 shanties were completely gutted when a fire broke out at a slum near the Ultadanga railway station in northern Kolkata.

The fire started on Monday night at around 2230 hrs, IST at the slum near the Bidhannagar railway station. The sources said 25 fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flame, which raged till 0100 hrs, IST early Tuesday.

The fire fighters were able to douse the flames. Officials in the fire department confirmed there were no other causalities apart from the child who was rushed immediately to the hospital.

Train services in the Sealdah main division were affected for a couple of hours. The cause of the fire is not yet clear.

"We were sleeping when suddenly we woke up to the fire. I could escape with my children but could not save any of my belongings," said a Rani Sardar, among the 500-odd people rendered homeless by the blaze.

Police said the cause of the fire was not known immediately.
