New Delhi: The Lok Sabha was adjourned for 90 minutes on Wednesday after a row between Left and BJP MPs over the Sethusamudram project.
The government said that there was no scientific evidence to prove the existence of a historical structure, but BJP leader V K Malhotra said that if project were to be carried out it would “destroy the Ram Setu” (a mythological bridge that connects India and Sri Lanka). This may “hurt religious sentiments of the Hindus” he said.
As Congress, Left and DMK members argued with BJP MPs, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee adjourned the House for 90 minutes.
Shipping Minister T R Baalu said surveys by Indian archaeological and scientific institutions and USA’s National Aeronautics and Space Agency have proved that no “man-made structure” exists in the area.
"In the absence of any clinching evidence, none of the successive governments, including the NDA government, has either declared or initiated action to declare the project site or parts thereof as Monument of National Importance," he said.
“Neither does the alignment of the Sethusamudram Ship Channel contain any UNESCO declared World Heritage site."
Malhotra replied that it was a question of the “faith” and Hindus believed that Lord Ram and his army that crossed the Ram-Setu to attack Ravana’s Lanka
