Kolkata: A city court on Saturday remanded East Bengal football coach, Subhash Bhowmick, to judicial custody till December 9.
Bhowmick's lawyer, Ashok Mukherjee, had applied for bail but the city court denied it.
Bhowmick, who was also working as a Superintendent in the Central Excise office, was arrested on Friday afternoon by CBI officials for allegedly taking a bribe of of Rs 1.5 lakh from a factory owner.
Bhowmick is a superintendent of the anti-evasion unit of the Central Excise department and had met the factory owner when he had conducted an excise raid on his factory on Wednesday
He allegedly asked the owner for Rs 4 lakh as a price for not reporting him. The two negotiated and a deal was struck at Rs 1.5 lakh.
However, when Bhowmick left, the factory owner called the CBI and gave them the name of the location where he was going to meet Bhowmick.
The CBI laid a trap for Bhowmick and waited for him to take a bribe before moving out into the open and arresting him.
There was a brief struggle in which Bhowmick reportedly assaulted a senior CBI officer and tried to escape. He was then tackled on the road by officers and eventually taken into custody.
He has been charged under the Anti-corruption Act and was questioned on Friday night at the CBI headquarters in Kolkata, following which he was sent to the Central lock-up at Lalbazar.
The CBI has raided three houses belonging to Bhowmick in Kolkata and claim to have traced lakhs of rupees lying in his bank accounts.
If found guilty, Bhowmick might be sent to jail for five years.
Bhowmick was later produced before a Special Bench of Alipore District and Sessions court on Saturday where he was remanded to judicial custody.
