The change in lifestyle and advancements in technology have led us to leading a largely sedentary lifestyle, which in turn is responsible for the wide growth in the general population’s obesity levels. This is to the extent that obesity is now being treated like an epidemic.A number of treatments and procedures have come out to tackle the problem before India develops the largest sick population. However, what really is the most effective treatment is prevention. Raising awareness about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the downside of being obese is the key. In light of this, Global hospitals has launched the anti-obesity month for 30 days, discounting holidays, starting from October 28 up till December 3.Besides conducting free check up camps, the hospital will also facilitate required procedures at a discounted rate. The hospital has also been successful at Bariatric surgery, a procedure that controls food intake and increases the metabolic rate, thus helping in weight loss and controlling the calorie intake.35 million diabetic patients in India are diabetic because of their obesity. The country is also fast developing as the diabetic capital of the world primarily because of its sedentary lifestyle and the resulting obesity. Says Dr K Ravindranath, chairman and managing director of the hospital, “Nowadays being sick is a very expensive affair. Plus the amount of suffering that one has to go through is even more.Eating right and staying healthy is the cheapest and best way to live.We need to create an awareness about this.” He further elaborated on how the change in lifestyle - from walking to school everyday to being enrolled in ultra modern air conditioned schools, having a remote control for everything and the advent of high-calorific unhealthy foods hijacking our eating schedules - has made us all the more lazier and unhealthy and fat. “Prevention is the best medicine. There are cases that can’t be helped due to genetic make-up or something else. But as long as we can, we must stay healthy.”
