At least four people were killed in two shootings in nearby towns in upstate New York on Wednesday and police were searching for a single gunman, according to local media reports.

Authorities confirmed the shootings took place in the Village of Herkimer at about 9:50 am EDT and in nearby Mohawk, but declined to disclosed details about injuries or deaths.

WKTV television in Utica reported a total of six people were shot, including two killed at Gaffey's Car Wash on Mohawk Street in Herkimer and two killed at John's Barber Shop in Mohawk.

Schools in the area were placed on lockdown as a result, WKTV reported. No further details were immediately available.

The two towns are located about midway between the state's capital Albany and the city of Syracuse.
