New Delhi: The spurt in violence continued in Assam on Wednesday as suspected ULFA militants triggered a blast near an aluminum factory in Upper Assam's Tinsukia district and made an abortive attempt on the life of an MLA, belonging to the Asom Gana Parishad in Rangiya, about 45 km south of capital Guwahati.
According to reports reaching here, suspected ULFA militants attacked AGP MLA Aloka Sarma near Rangiya town in Lower Assam, when the militants fired indiscriminately on her convoy when she was returning from her constituency in Nalbari. The lady MLA, however, escaped unhurt. More details on the incident are still awaited. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon.
Incidentally, Aloka Sarma happens to be the wife of former Assam PWD and Forest Minister Nagen Sarma, who had been assassinated by the same outfit in January 2000.
Earlier in the day, suspected ULFA militants triggered a blast near an aluminum factory in Upper Assam's Tinsukia district. The bomb went off at 0745 hrs (IST) near an aluminum manufacturing plant at Pakorijan, about 3 km from Tinsukia town. According to police sources a time device was used in the attack. There was no casualty or injury.
Only a portion of the factory's wall was damaged under the impact of the blast of the blast. Police immediately cordoned off the area and launched combing operation.
In yet another incident, security forces shot dead two businessmen when they mistook them for militants as they tried to enter an oil installation on Wednesday. The two traders were on a bicycle. They were shot when they had attempted to enter a prohibited site at Geleki in Sibsagar district.
