Producers of South Asian countries have decided to make a feature film on human trafficking.

New Delhi: For the first time, leading producers of South Asian countries have decided to join hands and put in their money to make a feature film on a major issue afflicting them all human trafficking.

An agreement for making the film, to be directed by young Rakesh Mehta whose debut film 'Khudakhushi' wowed critics at several international festivals last year, was signed on the concluding day of the South Asian Film Festival in Panaji on Sunday, South Asia Foundation General Secretary Rahul Barua told PTI.

The agreement was inked by South Asian Foundation, which organised the festival, Impress Telefilms, a big production house of Bangladesh, Roya Films of Afghanistan and Bhutan's Karma Dekhi Productions, he said.

Besides production houses from Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka have also evinced keen interest to fund the movie.

Barua said the shooting of the film is expected to begin early next year and not only the cast but also the locales will cover the South Asian countries.

Barua further added that the first half of the script was ready and "we have circulated the structure of the film to participating countries for in-principle approval".

"This is the first time that filmmakers from South Asian countries have come together to produce a film on a burning common issue facing them," he said.

'Khudakhushi' is a story about two Muslim youths who get involved in terrorist activities but by the time they realize the gravity of the crime they are involved in it is too late for them to come out of it.
