TIRUCHY: While admitting the accusation that the DMK headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, was built on a land grabbed from a zamindar family was part of the Sarkaria Commission report, party president M Karunanidhi questioned the validity of the report and claimed that the transaction was legal. AIADMK founder MGR was one of the complainants in the Sarkaria Commission. But, when summoned for an enquiry, MGR simply said his complaints was based on what others told him. “This was how the Commission inquiry was conducted”, he said. Pointing out that all the 10 heirs of the Zamindar had signed the sale deed for the Anna Arivalayam land, bought by the DMK trust and challenged that he was ready to face a case on the issue, he said that in 1972, when the land was bought, MGR, who was the party treasurer, was a member of the DMK trust, alongwith former minister Nedunchezhian. “Without arrogance and with affection, I challenge Jayalalithaa to file a case. Is she ready to do it”, the DMK leader asked, in a public meeting here, to seek support for party candidate KN Nehru in the Tiruchy West by-election. Commenting on the cases against partymen, he said the DMK cadre would not bow to pressure of cases and arrests, and they would come back strongly against any kind of oppression. “The DMK could not be destroyed under any circumstances, by anyone and at any time”, Karunanidhi asserted. “The teachings of EVR Periyar and Anna continue to be the brain and heart of the DMK and hence, no one can destroy it”, he said.“We are not worried about electoral defeats. Even during the days of emergency, the DMK cadre were walking upright, he said. He also claimed that the DMK was not formed to gain power, but it was formed for the welfare of Tamils”, he said. A particular group was trying to destroy the DMK and was advising others to form or break alliances to defeat DMK, he said. “Tamil people should know themselves and they should realise who their enemies and friends are. Tamils should should know, who belong to their race”, Karunanidhi said. Whether I was the Chief Minister or not, I have worked for the upliftment of Tamil. I started my political career with the words ‘long live Tamil’. This love for Tamil had not been erased from his heart and will not be erased”, he added.
