ALUVA: Amid protest from BJP activists, Aluva Municipal office was re-christened as U J Tharian Memorial Municipal Office here this evening.Union Minister K V Thomas announced the change in name of the Municipal Office at a function held here on Friday. Minister K Babu presided over the meeting. M N Sathydevan introduced Dr C M Hyderali chosen for the U J Tharian Memorial Award,  instituted by U J Tharian Foundation, for his outstanding contributions in pain and palliative care and charities. Minister V K Ebrahim Kunju presented the award.U J Tharian was the chairman of Aluva Municipality for about eleven years from 1968-79. He is considered to be the main architect of Aluva town.  Tharian was also the chairman of erstwhile Bank of Cochin. He was presented with the Maha Jubilee Award by the All Kerala Catholic Congress in 2000. His 5th death anniversary was on Friday. MLA Anwar Sadath, K Mohammed Ali, M T Jacob, M O John, Jose Visthayathil and Lissy Abraham were among those who spoke on the occasion.Meanwhile , BJP activists took out a protest rally holding black flags condemning the action of the municipal council to rename the office after U J Tharian. The rally was blocked by police following which they staged a dharna. BJP state vice-president P M Velayudhan inaugurated the dharna. State committee member A K Nazeer presided. Meanwhile Ebrahim Kunju’s car had to re-route after the main road to the venue was blocked by BJP activists. Two Yuva Morcha activists were taken into custody for trying to block the car of the minister. They were later released. BJP leaders said that the agitation would be intensified and would approach the High Court against the renaming the office.
