New Delhi: Cardiologists at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences have successfully operated upon an eight-day-old baby suffering from a rare congenital heart defect.

The baby from Bihar was suffering from Ectopia Cordis in which the heart is formed outside the body. He was brought to AIIMS last Friday.

After stabilising his condition, a one stage surgery was performed on Thursday to place the heart in the chest cavity.

The baby is currently being monitored. This is the first time such kind of operation has been performed without suspending the body functions of the patient.

Experts say this could well be the first case in India to have survived the operation.

Only eight in one million cases are born with this condition. Over 230 such cases have been reported globally of which only three have survived.
