A 24-year-old Kollywood actor was arrested after he lost control over his car and hit a two-wheeler and two autos, injuring four persons, on Poonamallee High Road on Sunday morning. Police said the accident occurred as the actor fell asleep while driving.
Police said Sriranjan, a new face in Tamil cinema who essayed the lead role in the film Theni Mavattum, was arrested for causing grievous injuries to four others. Sriranjan was returning from a film shoot around 8 am when the incident occurred, traffic officials said. While proceeding towards the Central Railway Station police station, he lost control of his vehicle and hit a two-wheeler on the extreme left of the Poonamallee High Road and allegedly dragged it for a few feet. Meanwhile, Inspector Anandan, a security officer for a High Court judge, had stopped his two-wheeler and was talking over his phone while his nephew Govardhan was seated behind, when the car hit their vehicle next, throwing them away, police said. Anandan and Govardhan were later admitted to a private hospital with severe injuries.
The actor’s car did not stop with that as it went on to hit an auto in front of the two-wheeler that had just dropped a passenger and then, another auto parked in front of it, injuring auto drivers Prabhu Das and Munivelu, before coming to a screeching halt, police said.
While one of them sustained a fracture in his limb and injured his shoulder, the other suffered injuries to his hip, neck and left shoulder, police said. They were also undergoing treatment.
Police, who arrested Sriranjan and seized his car, said the actor told them that he fell asleep while driving, as he was tired after working on the sets. “He was returning from a film shoot and fell asleep. He sustained abrasions,” a traffic police official said. Police registered a case under IPC section 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others).
