7 of Family Burnt Coal To Escape Winters in UP’s Amroha, 5 Found Dead Next Day
The cause of the death of the five family members was suspected to be asphyxiation, which was caused by the coal brazier (angithi), the family burnt on Monday night.

In a tragic incident, five of the seven family members sleeping in their house died due to asphyxiation in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district on Tuesday morning. The incident took place in Allipur Bhud village, police said, adding two more family members were admitted to a hospital.

According to the police, the cause of the death of the five children was suspected to be suffocation, which was caused by the coal brazier (angithi), the family used on Monday night to get warmth amid the cold weather conditions.

“Prima facie the cause of death could be due to lack of oxygen because these people had burnt a coal brazier in their room,” the police said.

Seven members of the family went to sleep on Monday night, and when they didn’t open their door till Tuesday evening, the neighbours got suspicious and forcefully entered the home after breaking the door.

The deceased were identified as Sonam (19), Waris (17), Mehak (16), Zaid (15) and Mahir (12). The five were declared brought dead.

Earlier in September last year, a family of four died in their sleep in Karnataka’s Doddaballapura due to suffocation by smoke from the burning charcoal that they had kept in their room to keep themselves warm.

Notably, the burning of coal (angithi) in a closed space can lead to suffocation and breathing issues as it releases harmful gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc. If the room it is burned in is closed, it releases these gases and reduces the flow of oxygen in the closed room leading to suffocation. In fact, prolonged exposure to these harmful gases can even cause death.
