A mother of four from Thirupalaikudi submitted a petition to the District Collector on grievance day on Monday stating that she had lost all communication with her husband, Raja, who left to Saudi Arabia seven months ago.
In her petition, Samayavalli said that ever since her husband had left for the Gulf country, she had been leading a hard life with her four children. Samayavalli, daughter of Neelameham and Devi of Thirupalaikudi, was married to Raja 11 years ago. Five-and-a-half years after marriage, Raja left for Saudi Arabia as a contract worker for fishing.
The couple has four children, including two girls. Meanwhile, Raja had informed Samayavalli in December, 2011 that the fishing industry there had turned competitive and things were not smooth among his colleagues. Samayavalli had consoled him and advised him to return home at the earliest. Since then, there had been communication from Raja. Samayavalli tried to call him up in Saudi Arabia but her efforts turned futile.
During the past seven months, she had inquired with other fishermen, including Jayaraman of Thirupalaikudi, about her husband’s whereabouts. But they could not give proper answer to her.
Smayavalli’s mother Devi said that her daughter was left to struggle for life with four children. Samayavalli and her children were currently underthe care of Devi and Neelameham. However, Neelameham fell sick and could not venture into the sea for fishing regularly, which has affected the family, she added.
Samayavalli had some solace when she found employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). But the income was not enough to make ends meet.
Samayavalli told Express that her husband was missing under a mysterious manner and the needle of suspicion pointed at a few of his colleagues who refused to divulge the truth.
Her husband had hinted at several difficulties that had besieged the fishing industry there when they last spoke in December, 2011. Raja went incommunicado since then.
