Hyderabad: Rescue workers have retrieved the bodies of 60 victims who were killed when an overcrowded boat sank in the Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh's Mahabubnagar district five days ago, said an official on Monday.
According to district officials, 12 bodies were recovered on Monday and 47 on Sunday. One body was found on Saturday. "The search operations are nearly completed and bodies of all victims except one have been recovered," said an official.
The accident occurred on Thursday when the boat, carrying 80 people against its capacity of 35 and sank in the backwaters of Srisailam dam.
At least 61 people were killed. Mechanised boats in the area had rescued 19 people immediately. The villagers were reportedly on their way to a temple fair.
The relatives of 55 victims carried their bodies back to their villages in Kurnool district while the last rites of many were performed on the banks of the river.
