HYDERABAD: The fate of five engineering colleges in Khammam district, which were caught manipulating the web options of Eamcet qualifiers who were seeking admissions to engineering courses and against whom the police has sought cancellation of recognition, will be decided by the state government in the next few days. The principal secretary (higher education) is likely to take a call on the matter after going through the explanations given by the college managements in response to the notices slapped by the commissioner of technical education.Khammam superintendent of police P Hari Kumar had written a letter to the commissioner of technical education and AP State Council for Higher Education recommending cancellation of recognition of the five engineering colleges after their managements had been caught manipulating the web options of some students last month. The police had registered cases against 14 persons, including two promoters of the colleges, and sleuths found the accused manipulating the web options of 35 students. The 14 accused also include the owners of two colleges Parupalli Ushakiran and Pulipati Prasad. Ushakiran is the correspondent of three engineering colleges— Vijaya Engineering College, Meda Institute of Engineering & Technology and Kavitha Engineering College. Prasad owns Pulipati Prasad Engineering College. The police also registered a case against Laqsha Engineering College for employing some persons to manipulate the options. After receiving the recommendation letter from the Khammam police, the commissioner of technical education slapped notices on the five colleges seeking explanation from them by September 26.The colleges responded before the deadline and sent explanation to commissioner of technical education K Lakshimnaryana. With Lakshminaryana retiring from service in the last week of September, special secretary to higher education Dobriyal took additional charge as the commissioner. The sending of explanations to principal secretary (higher education) was delayed as there was no full-time commissioner of technical education at present.Speaking to Express, joint director of technical education Srinivas said they would forward the colleges' explanations in a couple of days to the principal secretary (higher education) who will take appropriate action against the college managements if he is not satisfied with their explanations.APSCHE secretary N Rajasekhara Reddy told Express that the principal secretary may take three kinds of action— recommend to the government to take back the recognition accorded to the college, recommend to the respective university to disaffiliate the college or recommend to the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to cancel the recognition. The principal secretary can, as an immediate measure, ask the university to disaffiliate the colleges if he was not satisfied with the explanations given by them, Reddy said.
