Shillong: Five alleged extortionists were lynched by public in separate incidents in East Garo Hills on Tuesday, police said.
A group of seven armed persons had come to Jambal, about a kilometre from Rongjeng, and demanded money at gunpoint this afternoon, police said. Angry villagers gheraoed them.
The seven-member group then fired in the air to try and disperse the crowd, but the latter did not move, and caught three of them.
After a severe round of beating by the villagers, the three while the rest four managed to escape from the spot, police said.
However, two of them were caught at Silchang Gittim by villagers, who severely assaulted them causing death of two persons on the spot, police said.
Rongjeng police station registered a case in this connection.
About two months ago, three extortionists were lynched near Adokgre in North Garo Hills while another two were lynched in South Garo Hills region.
