CHENNAI: In his first visit to the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University here, State Minister for Law, Courts and Prisons, G Senthamizhan, distributed admission cards for the top rankers, based on the cut-off secured by the students. At the event on Wednesday, Senthamizhan maintained a low profile and did not address the gathered parents, students or mediapersons. In fact, he arrived an hour late owing to the fact that he had rushed to the Chennai Airport as part of the Chief Minister’s send-off party. He looked up and smiled when the Registrar told the audience that he had quietly been pursuing his PhD in the same varsity where he was serving as the honorary Pro-Chancellor.Speaking at the programme, D Gopal, Registrar-in-Charge of TNDALU, said that it was heartening to note that a larger number of students from the scheduled castes had obtained admission to the university in 2011. He also announced that despite the varsity having printed and distributed close to 5,000 applications in April this year, they had received only 2,990 applications; this is however, not a cause for concern.“There is still an incremental increase in applications received every year,” he said. The applications were received for the five-year BABL degree course for all the affiliated colleges under the varsity, of which 1,052 seats are available through counselling. In what has now been established as a continuing trend, the largest number of applicants for the university hails from the Scheduled Caste (SC). Fresh out of high school, a large number of students from lower-to-middle class homes across Tamil Nadu aspire to don the coveted black robe, explained D Gopal. “For the last few years, we have seen that the lion’s share of the applicants have been from the SC group,” he said. Of the total, as many as 1,253 applications bear testament to this fact. Taking into consideration that most of the 282 applications are also from SC students that’s close to half the total number. Though the reservation for the SC students is a combined 18 per cent as opposed to the 31 per cent reserved for pure OC, the registrar reveals that former gain where the latter, do not appear. “Only 93 applicants from forward communities have applied for close to 300 seats. After they are filled the remaining are given for deserving candidates from the other quota,” he said.
