Vellore district police seized and destroyed 4,500 litres of fermented wash and arrested a bootlegger during an inter-state anti-hooch raid. The raid was conducted in association with the Excise Department of Andhra Pradesh (AP) along the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border area on Wednesday.

A total of 40 police personnel attached to the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) of Vellore district and 10 personnel from Excise Department of Chittoor district in AP conducted the raid deep inside Vellipatala forest area on the TN-AP border.

Police seized 4,500 litres of fermented wash and destroyed it.

They also arrested Selvam (20) of Konthalapalli in Chittoor district and registered a case against him under section 4 (1) (aa) of Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act. He was sent to the Vellore Central Prison for Men, Deputy Superintendent of PEW H Gagairaj, who led the team, said.

Superintendent of Police of Vellore district, I Eswaran, said they have planned to conduct a series of raids along the TN-AP border to prevent smuggling of arrack into Vellore district. “We will conduct such inter-state anti-hooch raids targeting distillation points in the forest areas along the TN-AP border areas. The raids will aim at preventing smuggling of arrack into Vellore district,”  the SP said.

Eswaran said they had also launched a special drive against bootleggers indulging in brewing and selling liquor across the district. On Wednesday, special teams that were constituted to carry out surprise raids against cotton gambling, selling of illicit liquor and banned lotteries, arrested 49 bootleggers. Police booked cases against  them under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act. Later, they were remanded.
