How to Use Solver on a TI 83/TI 84
The TI-83/TI-84 calculator is an essential tool for any student in a math or science course. Solving for unknown variables is a common problem that students may run across while taking these courses. This manual tells you how to utilize your calculator to solve for unknown variables. If you are at least at an intermediate level in algebra, can understand the math behind this calculation, and are somewhat familiar with the TI-83/TI-84 calculators, get started at step 1, below.
Steps

Remember that there are multiple methods to solving an equation with one unknown. For complex problems that route may not be straightforward and solver would be the best way to go.

Write the equation you want to solve on a piece of paper. Sample equation: 7x^4 + 2x^3 – 5x + 2 = 43 + 3x.

On the paper, move variables around using algebra to have one side of the equation set to “0”. You are now ready to solve for x using solver.

Turn on the calculator using the “on” button.

Press the “MATH” button.

Navigate using the arrow keys to the “Solver” option, press “Enter”.

Type in the equation (the other side without the “0”) as it appears onto the calculator. Warning: read proceeding sections in this step before attempting. To type in X use the “X,T,Ø,n” button. To type in powers of numbers use the “^” button followed by the number of the power. Complete the rest of this equation and press “Enter”.

Press the “Alpha” then “Enter” button.

Review the result. The number for “X=” should change to the answer of the unknown variable.

What's your reaction?
