Liverpool: Brendan Rodgers' decision to rest Steven Gerrard failed to pay dividends as even the Liverpool captain's emergence off the bench failed to inspire his side to break down a resolute Sunderland with their Premier League match finishing 0-0 Saturday.

Liverpool's must-win Champions League tie at home to Basle on Tuesday, followed by a trip to Old Trafford, meant this was a game which was always earmarked for the 34-year-old midfielder to sit out.

Athough Gerrard's appearance with 23 minutes to go at Anfield lifted his teammates, particularly Raheem Sterling, they still could not find the breakthrough and had to settle for a point.

On the other hand, Tottenham was forced to hang on to draw 0-0 against Crystal Palace on Saturday, continuing its poor home form in the Premier League.

Jason Puncheon hit a shot against the bar in the second half and also had a goal disallowed among a slew of chances created by Palace at White Hart Lane.

Spurs are stuck in mid-table after failing to win at home for a fifth time in eight attempts this season. After appearing to turn a corner with an impressive 2-1 win over Everton last weekend, they have lost 3-0 at Chelsea and been dominated at home by a likely relegation contender.

Roberto Soldado wasted Tottenham's best chance in the first half.
