CBSE to Introduce Bi-Annual Board Exams Starting 2024-25 Academic Session: Reports
The bi-annual board exams will provide class 10 and 12 students with extra time and chances to excel academically and also to retain their best scores

Beginning with the academic year 2024–25, students in Classes 10 and 12 of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will have the opportunity to take the board exams twice a year due to the implementation of bi-annual board exams. Unlike traditional systems, participation in both exams offered under the bi-annual board exam format is not mandatory for students.

The fresh approach gives students flexibility and control over their exam schedule, which is intended to reduce their anxiety about missing any one opportunity. According to CBSE authorities who spoke with the Times of India, candidates who feel sufficiently prepared and happy with their exam results from one session may decide not to take the next one.

The rationale behind this approach is to provide students in classes 10 and 12 with extra time and chances to excel academically. Furthermore, this method promotes a positive learning atmosphere by giving students the choice to retain their best scores.

This kind of provision was previously provided by CBSE on a temporary basis during the COVID-19 pandemic year.

The implementation of the bi-annual board exam format will begin with the academic year 2024–2025, as stated by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in an interview with the Times of India (TOI). He clarified that the method would apply to the Class 10 and 12 board exams in 2025, affecting the current Class 9 and 11 batches of students.

While CBSE is rolling out these revolutionary changes for the 2024–25 academic year, on the other hand, the Class 10 and 12 board exams for the 2023–2024 batch are scheduled to start on February 15. Students are looking forward to receiving their exam admit cards shortly.

Moreover, the number of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in the forthcoming CBSE board exams is going to increase. One of the most recent changes is that the CBSE Class 12 board exams for 2024 will have roughly 20 per cent of questions based on multiple-choice questions. The distribution of questions will be such that 40 per cent of questions will be competency-based, encompassing MCQs, source-based, and case-study-based questions, while the remaining 40 per cent of questions will consist of short and long answer-type questions.

A sizeable 38.82 lakh applicants took part in the Central Board of Secondary Education’s Class 10 and Class 12 board exams in the year 2023. Out of this number, 21.86 lakh students were in Class 10 while 16.96 lakh candidates took the Class 12 exams, demonstrating the countrywide scope of the CBSE board examinations.
