Star Indian all-rounder Axar Patel, who was hammered for 24 runs in one over during the T20 World Cup 2024 final played between India and South Africa in Barbados on June 29, has opened up about what Indian skipper Rohit Sharma told him after that forgetful over. Axar was taken to the cleaners by Heinrich Klaasen during the 15th over of the run chase at the Kensington Oval, which brought the equation down to 30 runs needed from 30 balls.
During an interaction with Cricbuzz, the 30-year-old cricketer shared his feelings after that last over of his spell and said that Rohit approached him and reassured him by saying that he bowled his best.
“In the final, when Heinrich Klaasen was aggressive against me, Rohit approached me and reassured me, saying, ‘It’s alright. You bowled your best. If he hits a good shot, there’s not much you can do. Just focus on the next ball.’” Axar said.
Speaking further, Axar talked about how those words from the skipper helped him with his confidence in the final.
“His support and encouragement boosted my confidence. After I completed the over, he tapped my shoulder and said, ‘Well done. Don’t worry.’” Axar added.
He claimed that Rohit had always excelled at supporting his players like that. “Such conversations from your captain lift you and keep you motivated on the field. Rohit excels at providing that kind of support,” the 30-year-old said.
Despite the forgetful last over, Axar was brilliant in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa. He came out to bat at No. 5 for Men in Blue and, with the help of one four and four sixes, scored 47 runs from 31 balls. He turned the game in India’s favour with his attacking approach after India was once reduced to 34 for 3 in 4.3 overs. He added 72 runs for the fourth with Virat Kohli (76).
In the bowling as well, apart from his last over, he bowled tight lines and only conceded 25 runs in the first three overs. He also dismissed Tristan Stubbs (31) on the fifth ball of the ninth over.
