Legendary Indian cricketer and former captain MS Dhoni has reserved big praise for batting superstar Virat Kohli by saying that the 35-year-old is amongst the best when it comes to world cricket. Kohli, who made his international debut for India in 2008 under Dhoni’s captaincy, has established himself as one of the greatest batters of all time. He has scored over 26,000 runs in international cricket, which is the fourth most by any player.
During an event in Hyderabad, Dhoni also opened up about his relationship with the right-handed batter and said that whenever they meet, they make sure to have a chat with each other.
“We have been colleagues who played for India for a very long time. He (Kohli) has been amongst the best when it comes to world cricket. And the fact that I could bat a lot with him during the middle overs was a lot of fun because we used to take a lot of twos and threes in the game, so it has always been fun. It is not like we meet very often, but whenever we get a chance, we make sure that we go on the side and chat for some time. We talk about what is going on, so that is our relationship,” said Dhoni.
Kohli, who is only the second cricketer after Dhoni to win all three ICC white-ball trophies, made his ODI and Test debuts for India under Dhoni’s captaincy in 2008 and 2011, respectively. He played multiple matches under him, and then, from 2017 onwards, Dhoni also played for a couple of years under Kohli’s captaincy.
Virat was part of the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup 2024 title in the West Indies and the USA in June 2024. He scored 76 runs from 59 balls in the final against South Africa to help India post a total of 176 runs on the board, which in the end proved to be enough.
After helping India win the shortest format megaevent for the second time in history, Kohli announced his retirement from T20Is.
