After Brendon McCullum opened the Indian Premier League in the best possible manner with a whirlwind 158* – the first IPL century – in the first-ever match of the IPL in Bengaluru on 18th April, 2008, it has taken 1090 further IPL matches for the league to reach the 100 centuries mark, when Gujarat Titans’ Sai Sudarshan reached his ton vs Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on 10th May, 2008. In the same match the 101st century of the league was also registered by Sudarshan’s GT skipper Shubman Gill. Virat Kohli, the all-time leading run-getter in the league’s history had, a day prior, come close to hitting the 100th century in IPL, but got out for 92 vs Punjab Kings. It would have been fitting if the King had gotten to the mark. And even more if the ‘Crown Prince’ could, but that honour now belongs to Tamil Nadu’s B Sai Sudarshan.

While Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Brendon McCullum was the first ever IPL centurion, Manish Pandey was the first Indian player to score a ton when he hit 114* at Centurion in 2009. The 50th IPL century was hit by Rishabh Pant for Delhi Daredevils in 2018 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad. While the 50th IPL 100 came only in 2018, 10 years after the first, the journey from 50th to 100th has taken only half the time.
The all-time highest century maker is, unsurprisingly, Virat Kohli, with eight 100+ scores, while England’s Jos Buttler is closing in on the record with seven to his name. IPL enigma Chris Gayle has 6 to his name and the top 5 is rounded off by Shubman Gill (4) and KL Rahul (4).
The current season, IPL 2024, is now the most productive season in terms of centuries with 14 hundreds already recorded this season. 2023 edition saw 12 centuries being hit. The first season in 2008 had 6 centuries, while the lowest number of centuries (2) came in the 2009 eidtion hosted in South Africa. Chris Gayle’s 175* for RCB vs Pune Warriors India in 2013 remains the highest individual score in IPL, while the record for the fastest IPL hundred is also with Gayle – taking only 30 deliveries to reach the triple-figure mark during his epic 175* knock.
The 101 centuries in IPL so far has come from 57 different players with 29 of them being Indian players and 28 of them are the foreign recruits. Here’s the list of every century made in the IPL:
