As festive season approaches, airline ticket prices usually see a sharp rise. But this year, the Centre is stepping in to ensure that passengers don’t face heavy fare hikes.
According to NDTV, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has made it clear that the government is “keeping an eye” on ticket prices.
“We’re monitoring all airlines. No passenger should face trouble while trying to go home for the festivals. Ticket prices shouldn’t shoot up too much,” said Naidu, addressing concerns about the usual spike in holiday fares.
With demand increasing during this time, fares often surge. Naidu emphasized that while airlines won’t be forced to maintain the same prices, the government will keep a close check, especially on routes with high festival traffic.
Meanwhile, the aviation industry is already navigating turbulence, with budget carrier SpiceJet battling financial woes. The government is closely observing the situation at SpiceJet, which is trying to raise funds to meet its obligations.
Naidu made these remarks at the India Regional Air Mobility Conference, where he also highlighted the country’s ambitious plans for the aviation sector. India aims to become the largest aviation market by 2035, with over 1,200 new aircraft orders and plans to build 350-400 new airports in the next 10-20 years.
“We’re laying the groundwork for a future where India will be a global aviation hub,” he added.
