The Coimbatore Singanallur flyover has been a subject of discussion for over a year now.
After multiple delays due to various reasons, the flyover project has once again succumbed to another delay. This time, the main reason behind the delay of the flyover project is that there has been no response to the re-tender that was announced in February.
As a result, the National Highways (NH) has now decided to re-invite bids for the tender once the elections are over. The department has clarified that there has been no response by the contractors until now, resulting in further delay of the project. They have also clarified that the project would also need to rework its costs.
According to a report from The Hindu, K. Kathirmathiyon, who is the secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, said, “The project cost would have to be approved by the central government if it were reworked. However, since the current cost estimates are not viable, there might be no other option but to rework the project cost. This was expected to delay the project further.”
According to earlier reports, the Coimbatore Singanallur flyover project was announced last year with an estimated budget of Rs 110 – Rs 147 crore. This project was supposed to be built over a period of two years. However, the project was subject to a delay because the government had plans for a metro rail on Trichy Road.
After the state government finalised the metro rail project for Avinashi Road and Sathyamangalam Road, they decided to go ahead with the flyover at Singanallur. The authorities decided to set up the project from Uzhavar Sandhai at Singanallur to Jai Shanthi Theatre for a distance of about three kilometres.
The flyover project reportedly faced another delay in February when the contractor who was supposed to build the start of the flyover projected a 35 per cent increase in the estimate. This led the NH authorities to go for a re-tender of the Coimbatore Singanallur flyover project. The project has faced several setbacks in the past, even though it was on the verge of being cancelled.
