BMW X3, X5 Petrol Variants Launched in India
The decision to bring petrol versions to India could be seen as an effect of NGT’s 2-litre diesel ban.

BMW added two petrol variants to their line-up in India on December 7. Petrol counterparts of the X3 and X5 SUVa were launched, which is a follow up to President BMW India Frank Schloeder's earlier announcement, when he said the entire BMW line-up will feature petrol engines by March 2017.

The BMW X3 xDrive28i comes with the same 2-litre 4-cylinder petrol unit that is offered in the 3 Series GT but has been detuned to produce 245PS (<7PS) and 350Nm at 1,250-4,800rpm. It will have an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The X3 is capable of doing 0-100 kmph in 6.5 seconds, BMW claims. It could be pitted against Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque. The The X5, on the other hand, rivals the Mercedes-Benz GLE and the Volvo XC90.

The BMW X5 is powered by a 3-litre inline 6-cylinder petrol engine that produces 306PS and 400Nm of torque at 1,200-5,000rpm. This will also have a an 8-speed automatic transmission. The two cars are equipped with xDrive that distributes power between the front and rear axle according to the terrain.

Both X3 and X5 are a part of the Efficient Dynamics range , which implies the two will come auto start/stop, eco pro mode, brake-energy regeneration and lightweight construction.

The new BMW X3 xDrive28i xLine has been priced at Rs 54.90 lakh, while the BMW X5 xDrive35i Design Pure Experience will cost Rs 73.50 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The X3 comes with iDrive touch controller with 22.3-cm touchscreen infotainment screen, hi-fi loudspeaker and rear-view camera, while the X5 26-cm infotainment system with navigation system with 3D maps, Harman Kardon entertainment system and rear-view camera.

The decision to bring petrol versions to India could be seen as an effect of NGT’s 2-litre diesel ban. Also, BMW could be refurbishing their product range as per the new Euro-VI emission norms, expected to be applied next year.
