Kohli's half-ton against Australia follows his magnificent century against New Zealand (117) in the semifinals, after he managed to put up scores of 51 against The Netherlands, an unbeaten 101 against South Africa and his 88-run knock against Sri Lanka in the league stage of the campaign.

Star Indian batsman Virat Kohli has been on a record-breaking spree at the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup 2023 and he brought up yet another milestone in the final of the tournament against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.

Kohli managed to make 54 runs off 63 deliveries to bring up his fifth consecutive half-century at the ICC showpiece. The 35-year-old batsman replicated his feat from the 2019 World Cup with the feat.

Previously, Australian batsman Steve Smith also managed to notch up five fifties on the trot during the 2015 edition of the World Cup.

Five-time champions Australia won the toss against India in the summit clash and opted to put the men in blue to bat first.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill opened the innings, but the youngster Gill was scalped for just 4 runs by Aussie strike bowler Mitchell Starc. Rohit, however, put up 47 runs on the board in quick fashion before being dismissed by spinner Glenn Maxwell.

Shreyas Iyer, who came into the final on the back of two tons on the trot, was scalped by Australian skipper Pat Cummins after having scored only 4 runs.

Kohli and KL Rahul steadied the Indian innings as both batsmen brought up their half-centuries to rebuild the Indian innings before Kohli was sent back to the pavilion by Cummins.

Ravindra Jadeja, who added nine runs from 22 deliveries was caught behind by Josh Inglis off pacer Josh Hazlewood’s delivery as maverick batsman Suryakumar Yadav came out to take the crease.
